Matthews Litter Sweep Cleans Up
The Town of Matthews celebrated North Carolina Litter Sweep Week last Saturday, September 23rd, with a community clean-up. Teams met at the gazebo in front of Town Hall, where they were assigned a route to clean and were issued "construction barrell orange" vests and litter bags.
Twon of Matthews officials participating in the litter sweep included Town Commissioners Jim Taylor and George Young, Gerallyn Trellue, Colten Marble, and Jason Peterson from Parks and Recreation, and Bev Martin and John Urban from the Appearance/Tree Board.
The largest team participating in the litter sweep was the Freewheelers Homeschool Roots and Shoots Chapter of Matthews, with nine members. The group was assigned to Brigman Road near the bowling alley. They picked up 10 bags of trash, with items including dirty diapers, lots of beer bottles (Bud Lite appeared to be a favorite, according to the team), stuffed animals, a car seat, and a chest of drawers.
Litter Sweep is a statewide roadside litter cleanup drive sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). It is a biannual event usually scheduled for the last two weeks of April and September. The NCDOT Office of Beautification Programs administers the Spring and Fall Litter Sweep.
